Part 18

The weekend had been filled with hours and hours of Norton showing me and James the local homeless hangouts. It had been an exhausting two and a half days for all of us. The small town of Wood Berry wouldn't seem like the typical kind of town where you could see the number of displaced families as we had. But here they were, lonely, scared and in desperate need of help, all kinds of help.
James and I stood in the doorway of our homeroom. We were tired to our core, but in another way we felt really good about what we had discovered over the weekend. So far we had honored what Norton had asked of us. That just meant that no one knew his location, not yet anyway. There was still something that Norton had to workout before all would be revealed. As co-partners to his plan James and I had agreed to do as he had asked.
This could either be a real good thing for Norton and all of us that were about to be involved in this very important eye opening awareness project, or we could all in up in jail.  Ha! Either way, James and I had a lot to do in order to kick off this project.
As the homeroom bell sounded, James and I both took a very deep breath at the same time as we turn to find our seats. Just as soon as homeroom let out he and I both needed to address Mr. Johnson about our new community project. Taking our seats beside each other as we always did, we waited for the announcements to start. The sooner this day began the sooner we could be moving forward with something very special for a fellow co-student that almost no one seemed to miss anymore .Perhaps now each and every student, teacher and employee of the school, every business owner and all of the people in our community would take care not to over look those who were so very less unfortunate.
Finally after fifteen minutes of babbling on about things that weren't half as important as what James and I needed to speak to Mr. Johnson about, the announcements came to an end. James leaned over whispering so that no one could hear him, "Si, you got my back, right? Don't forget how important this is to Norton and all of the others."
Looking at him like I could strangle him I replied, "James. I've always got your back. Dude, are you kidding me right about now?" I was very puzzled by his question.
“I know, I know. But this just feels more important than anything we've ever done. Can't let anybody mess this up, ya know?" he was just about to tilt his desk over as he leaned in closer and closer to me.
From the back of the room we could hear Dusty yelling out at us, "Man, you gonna give her a fat, juicy one right here in homeroom or what? That stinks." James turned his head looking back at Dusty just as the big paper ball flew by his head barely missing him.
“Seriously, Dusty-mite? You wanna get into it here and now? I'm gamed." James shouted back at him. He was ready to jump up out of his seat and toss it up with Dusty, but today of all days wasn't the time for this.
Touching his arm I reminded him of our need to stay in control, "James, we have bigger fish to fry today. Forget the dick wad in the back there. He's a maggot anyway." That was all that I needed to say. James turned back looking straight ahead. His mind was off in a different direction for a moment and that was good.
As patiently as we could, we sat and waited on the homeroom bell to ring knowing that that would be the beginning of something new in our efforts to really "clean up” our town. James and I had no intention of letting anyone, I mean anyone get in the way of us starting our plan.
Dusty and his pathetic followers would have to wait too. We would be seeing them again, but the next time we crossed paths we Dusty and the dusty-mites James and I would not be alone.
Sometimes in order for change to occur, people have to be strong enough inside their souls to withstand what others might shell out. Taking on new and fresh ideas required bold and often times brave actions.
Norton, James, and I would be the first to draw the line in the sand. Those who would step over it just might possibly become better for it.
We would just have to wait and see.
