We stood
under the bridge just watching the two bodies huddle together as the chill of
the night air lay heavy on them. For a moment I wasn't sure that James knew
exactly what his next move was going to be. He seemed as though he was in deep
thought as we stood there watching all of those pitiful people.
Finally taking a deep breath James spoke, "Well, we came here to find answers, right Si?" he asked almost like he needed my permission to make his move.
Looking at him then back to the two persons sitting close together against that cold bridge I replied, "Yep, we sure did. Is that where the answers begin?" I said asking the question I already knew the answer to.
"Indeed, Watson, indeed. Shall we begin?" he answered me almost sounding gleeful.
I smiled at him feeling much better now that he had at least broken the silence and the heaviness of our adventure. "Well, then Sir Sherlock, after you."
Squeezing my hand James and I took our first steps forward walking slowly towards the two people in our sight. I wasn't at all sure who they were or why they seem so important to finding Norton, but in a few seconds I would be experiencing the surprise of my life.
Finally, we were standing in front of the two people that James had been so interested in. I kept hoping that James had some great plan about what came next even though at first no one apparently noticed us or perhaps even care that James and I were there.
Looking at me for a second then back to the two people he had found he finally cleared his throat. Maybe as a way of introducing our presence to them. For whatever reason James didn't speak, his plan worked. The blanket that was pulled up higher than the forehead it covered slowly dropped. We could only see a pair of dark colored eyes behind the blanket that hid the rest of the face.
For what felt like a long, long time we stood looking at the pair of eyes that stared back at us in surprise. Only when the blanket had been completely dropped revealing the face behind it did I hear the breath escape my lungs and out my throat.
I just couldn't wrap my head around what my eyes told me I was seeing. At the very same moment James and I both spoke out loud emphasizing our certain surprise, "Norton? Is that you?"
The dirty blanket that had covered Norton's face completely dropped away. He sat there on the cold pavement just looking at us as though he couldn't believe he was seeing us either. His expression told of his dismay. Finally with a somber tone Norton replied, "Yes, it's me. How the heck did you guys find me?" he asked looking more puzzled than we were.
There was absolutely no denying that all of us were super surprised by this moment. Never in a million years could I have imagined that Norton Gibbs would be living under a bridge. Yet the biggest question that remained to be answered was why?
It was the why that would shock and tug at our hearts the most.
Norton had his own secrets and those secrets could quiet possibly shock our community to the core.
Norton didn't know it yet, but he probably was on his way to becoming a hero in his own right.
James and I would make sure of that, to the ends of the earth for him we would go.
