Part 11

The sky line was so beautiful, as the sunset created hues of pinkish orange and sherbet that covered all of the edges on the horizon of the night. I watched out from my bedroom window down to James' house. There I could directly see into his bedroom even if the lights weren't on.
So many nights I had sat all alone in my dark room just watching James play video games, talking on his phone to God only knows who, doing his homework and even chatting it up with me. If he ever knew that I sat so very still on my bed night after night gazing at him, wishing that I had the nerve to tell him how I felt, we might not be such good friends anymore. That was never going to happen. So, for the moment all I had was my ability to watch him knowing that I had to work so hard to hide how I felt about him.
Finally three hours after the sun had set James turned off his bedroom light and left his house heading towards mine. This was my cue to be ready for whatever crazy thing he had in mind. With James that could be just about anything.
A couple of minutes later the doorbell rang even before I could reach the door to greet him. Opening the front door he stepped inside and announced himself, “Hello, hello, Si ya ready?" he called out.
“Yeap, be right there." I hollered down at him as I took two steps at a time to reach the bottom of the stairs.
As usual for James he was playing his part of sleuthing to the hilt. He was dressed all in black and looking like the cat that just ate the canary. I, of course was dressed similar so that we could slip through the night without a moments notice, hopefully. Exactly where we where going and what we would be doing was something that James had yet to explain.
My curiosity got the best of me, "So, Sherlock where are we going? Got a clue to investigate?" I smiled as I thought of the two of us sleeking around town like real investigators. Only problem with that was we were two high school seniors out passed our curfew! Oh boy, this might be tricky if we get caught.
“It’s so freaking awesome Si. I think I know what maybe going on with Norton, but first we need to check something out. You ready for this? Really ready?" James asked reaching out for my hand and gently touching my finger tips.
I almost lost my breath as his fingers barely touched mine. It was the first time James had ever acted like this towards me. I thought for a second I was batting my eyelashes at him, almost like Hanna would if this was a date night for her and James.
Smiling at him I could only respond in a whisper, "Yes, of course. I'll follow you to the ends of the earth." It sounded some what like a cheesy novel, but hey, I went with it anyway.
Within five minutes we were out in the dark night, walking slow and deliberate, being careful to stay away for any lighted streets. A small misty white vapor escaped from between our lips as we walked down and out across the creepy woods. James looked left and right and then back over his shoulder as we adventured further and further into the tall trees and bushes.
Things felt completely weird and the animals and natures' voice at that time of night felt more like than land of the living dead. I half way expected a bunch of zombies to suddenly appear. Nothing like the walking dead to put total fear into the moment.
Finally after fifteen minutes of walking in pure darkness we appeared at the end of town. James stopped just shy of where the road began and the woods ended. There were lights all alone the street and one of the newest bridges that had been built and financed by the bank where Norton's father had been the president for the past several years.
Turning to look at James I just had to ask him my crazy question,   "Um, are we going down to the bridge, because if we are we might need a stick or a big log to protect ourselves." I spoke out loud feeling a little queasy at the thought.
Without batting an eye James turned to look at me smiling as he answered, "Oh yeah. That's where the answers begin. You ready Si?" he asked again this time his left eyebrow arched making his tone all that more serious.
With that all I could do was to cross my fingers, take a deep breath, saying, "To the ends of the earth and time."
