It was very
late as Norton finished sharing his story with us. Somewhere in my mind I was
digging very hard to understand all of the facts. Crap, there was stuff going
on that I could never have imaged certain well known people in this town would
be involved in. It was apparent that I didn’t have a clue about some of our
most important leaders and that really sucked.
After Norton had finally tied up the why, what, when and who of most of his circumstances James spoke. His voice was soft in a respectful way, more caring than I had ever known him to be, “My God, Norton. That's one hell of a story. Brother, you really got people seriously digging around trying to find you," pausing he let out a loud sigh, shaking his head, “The freak'n FBI has been here for almost two weeks now. Man, your ass is more than grass my friend. So, what's next?"
Norton looked at the small bundle covered in the raggedy blanket, then back at us. His dark eyes slightly picked up the reflection from the dim lamps along the street and under the bridge. It gave him a very eerie, but serious look, a good character change for Norton right about now.
“I’m going to finish what I started, be damn the cost." he replied with the most courage I think I've ever known him to have.
“Dude, I'm with ya. Tell me what I need to do to help." I jumped into the conversation feeling excited about solving a good mystery adventure.
James turned slightly towards me with a wicked smile, "I'm in, in every way Norton. You started something big, something important." Turning to look at me with those eyes that said we were all in for this one, all I could do was nod my head in agreement.
“You know we could possibly go to jail if we aren't careful." Norton responded, watching to see if we were going to be scared off from the path he was determined to take.
Laughing in a light giggly tone the words spelled out before I could stop them, "Oh hell, what's a little jail time for a good cause, right guys?"
Norton looked to James who in turn looked to me knowing that our next move was to design a plan that would cover everything we needed to address and fix this mess.
After a few seconds of dead silence James spoke again, this time fusing the fate that we would not turn back from. "Right is right, wrong is wrong and once in awhile real friends that give a crap about each other and their whole being have to bond together. I mean that very existences where you just have to step out on that edge and free fall." James turned looking far beyond just the moment of this night. He was truly searching for the heart of his inner soul as he continued, "We're doing this thing. Whatever it is that has to be done to make this right for Norton. After all he's the most deceit and honest person I've ever known and we owe him this much for all the bull shit he's ever had to take. Si, we gotta help him make this right."
There are times when everything you think you know about a person turns out to be all wrong. The truth is their real story may hold such deep, dark secrets that all they want is for someone to find a way to shine the light on it, thus revealing the darkness and setting it free.
Norton deserved some good light in his life and James and I would be the first of many to make that happen.
This would be Norton's finest moment of his young adult life. It would be the very change that would affect all of us for the better.
